“Oh, that’s nice.”

“They really try.”

Trying Simple Japanese

These three words already make people smile.

A Small Bow

A small bow shows respect.

日本人は “Oh, they know our culture.”

Queuing Quietly

This feels very Japanese to locals.

4.
Taking Trash Home

Japanese people notice this a lot.

Saying Thank You to Staff

That simple moment matters.

Being Quiet on Public Transport

People around you feel relieved.

Trying to Follow the Rules

Trying > Knowing everything

Asking Before Taking Photos

“Is it OK to take a photo?”

This question alone makes a great impression.

Being Careful with Shoes

This small action is surprisingly powerful.

Staying Calm When Confused

But staying calm and polite = respect.

Showing Interest in Japanese Culture

Food

History

Traditions

Curiosity feels respectful, not annoying.

Not Comparing Negatively

Instead of:

“My country is better.”

Try:

“It’s interesting how Japan does this.”

Huge difference.

13.
Being Kind to Children & Elderly

This aligns perfectly with Japanese values.

Saying Something When Leaving

Staff remember this.

Saying “I Like Japan”

Overused? Maybe.

Still effective? Absolutely.

But it’s best when followed by a reason.

What they really appreciate is:

Effort

Respect

Thoughtfulness

“Wait… really?”

Trains Are Always on Time

In Japan:

Being on time = basic responsibility

Lost Wallets Come Back

Why?

Strong honesty culture

Social pressure

Education from childhood

Still, don’t test it on purpose.

Staff Will Chase You

This surprises many visitors.

No Tipping Culture

Good service is standard.

Tip = confusion

Sometimes even considered rude.

Clean Toilets Are Free

Public toilets are:

Clean

Free

Everywhere

This is not common globally.

Vending Machines Everywhere

They sell:

Drinks

Ice cream

Hot coffee

Sometimes meals

And they rarely get vandalized.

Masks Are Consideration

It’s not political, it’s social etiquette.

Extremely Quiet Trains

No music

No calls

Low voices

For many foreigners:

“Is something wrong?”

People Line Up Automatically

No pushing

No shouting

Even without barriers, people queue.

Few Trash Cans, Very Clean

Because:

People take trash home

Strong anti-litter mindset

This shocks many visitors.

Money Goes on a Tray

Handing cash directly feels awkward in Japan.

Tray = politeness.

Staff Apologize a Lot

Even when it’s not their fault.

“Sorry” often means:

Thank you

Excuse me

Acknowledgment

Not always an apology.

Strict Rules, Little Flexibility

Rules are followed strictly.

Negotiation rarely works.

But once you know the rules, life is smooth.

Foreigners Are Also Expected to Read the Room

“You’re a foreigner” is not a free pass.

Effort matters more than perfection.

Small Politeness Matters

Bowing

Saying thank you

Waiting patiently

Small actions create big impressions.

Many Japanese customs are based on one idea:

Don’t bother others.

日本人はとても polite(礼儀正しい)ため、

“You didn’t break the rules, but people feel uncomfortable.”

Talking Too Loud

loud voice & loud laughter は

Rule:

If you think it’s normal, it’s probably too loud in Japan.

2.
Blocking the Way

Move to the side first.

Overcalling Staff

Avoid:

Snapping fingers

Shouting “Hey!”

Repeated small requests

Wait patiently or use call buttons.

Trying to Negotiate Rules

日本では

Rules are rules。

Constant Comparison

“I think my country is better.”

“I don’t understand why Japan does this.”

Curiosity is OK. Judgment is not.

Touching or Approaching Silently

日本では

sudden closeness = fear or discomfort。

Sitting on the Ground

sitting on the floor

Find a bench instead.

Mocking Japanese Language

Even if you think it’s funny, it’s disrespectful.

“I’m a foreigner.”

“So I didn’t know.”

This excuse works only once.

Lack of Cleanliness

Filming Without Care

People don’t like being filmed unintentionally.

特に:

店内

電車

子ども

Always think about others in the frame.

Not Saying “Thank You”

Thank you”

gratitude is social glue。

That’s what makes you a good traveler in Japan.
